During an inspection, it became clear that one major culvert – 140 feet long, 15 feet tall and running under heavily traveled Route 30 – had outlived its expected life. In 2002, the EPA entered into a federal consent decree with MSD, mandating the elimination of sanitary sewer overflows and significant mitigation of combined sewer overflows into receiving waterways. Engineers estimated the cost to mitigate the sewer overflows at $3.1 billion, an unacceptable capital expense to pass along to MSD’s customers.

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, Hirwaun Water Treatment Works, Glamorgan
Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water’s Hirwaun water treatment works is a small works (5Ml/d) which treats raw water from the Penderyn upland reservoir. Treatment is by coagulation with ferric sulphate and lime, flocculation and clarification by DAF. The clarified water is dosed with lime and this is followed by first stage filtration in four rapid gravity filters, intermediate electrochlorination and orthophosphoric acid dosing, and second stage filtration in four pressure filters. Final disinfection is by electrochlorination. The original electrochlorination plant was an Evoqua OSEC® packaged unit installed over twenty years ago and had reached the end of its asset life.

Remote Bathymetric Survey in Kalgoorlie Mine Pits, Australia Using an Unmanned Radio-controlled Boat
Surveys were conducted at three mining pits in January 2018 using the Xylem UK rQPOD radio controlled vessel and the SonTek HydroSurveyor-M9 system over two days. Speed of sound in water cor- rections, an integral part of any acoustic survey, were carried out using the SonTek CastAway-CTD. HYPACK software managed the prepara- tion, survey, processing and outputs for the survey.
