Background
In conjunction with the expansion of a new pedestrian and cycle path along Route 160, specifically the section between Sörbyvägen and Myggenäs, new water and sewage pipelines were installed. As a vital component of this project, a new sewage pumping station was established to ensure reliable and long-term wastewater management for the area.
In September 2024, Optivia AB signed an agreement with Xylem for the delivery and execution of the pumping station contract. The project was carried out as a fixed-price construction contract (AB 04) and covered the delivery, installation, and commissioning of a complete sewage pumping station. The final inspection was successfully conducted in June 2025.
Challenge
In infrastructure projects along heavily trafficked routes like Route 160, installation time is often a critical factor in minimizing local disruption. Furthermore, the coastal environment of Tjörn places high demands on material selection; superior corrosion resistance and long-term durability are essential to minimize future maintenance costs and prevent operational downtime.
Solution
Xylem delivered a complete, prefabricated pumping station solution that allowed several installation phases to be carried out efficiently on-site. The pumping station featured:
- Submersible pumps
- Pump sump in acid-resistant stainless steel (EN 1.4404)
- Prefabricated superstructure with a timber frame and internal stainless steel cladding
- Complete mechanical installation, electrical systems, and internal fittings
The sump, base plate, and internal piping were delivered and installed simultaneously. Following the backfilling process, the prefabricated building—complete with pre-installed electrical systems and interiors—was lifted into place. The facility was ready for full operation the very next day.

The completed pumping station provides Tjörn Municipality with a robust and reliable solution for long-term wastewater management. The prefabricated design enabled a high-quality, rapid installation with minimal disruption to the surrounding area.
