Pharmaceutical manufacturers must address APIs in their wastewater streams. Municipal WWTPs and regulatory agencies have begun regulating certain contaminants of concern, and this trend will continue and become more stringent. Contaminants of concern include antibiotics, steroids, hormones and endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), and other APIs that have adverse environmental impacts on aquatic life as well as endangering human health when discharged to surface waters. Wastewater treatment must address these residuals as well as the traditional wastewater constituents of BOD, TSS, ammonia, toxicity and pH.
Xylem has developed a suite of advanced wastewater treatment systems that can tackle the most recalcitrant APIs and endocrine disruptors, as well as traditional contaminants. Sanitaire’s MBR system combines aerobic biological treatment with UF to address BOD, TSS and nutrients, as well as many APIs. Wedeco’s UV and MiPRO advanced oxidation processes destroy bacteria as well as break down recalcitrant APIs. Leopold’s Biologically Active Filtration (BAF) completes the offering, which following ozonation, can effectively remove the oxidized API residuals.
