Hong Kong: development of digital twins for freshwater network in selected areas of New Territories East (NTE) Region

Challenge

Idrica, Xylem´s partner, has delivered its GoAigua solution (now called Xylem Vue) to the Hong Kong Water Supplies Department (WSD) as a pilot project. This deployment aims to develop a digital twin solution customized for the existing freshwater network in selected areas of its NTE Region. This project takes into account the complexity arising from the high supply pressure due to the topography of the terrain, high population density and the large number of underground services.

Solution

The Xylem Vue platform was implemented to tackle the challenges faced by WSD. Unified Network Management, Real-Time What-If Scenarios, Leak Detection and Service Operation Center were some of the solutions applied.

The adoption of digital twins for the existing freshwater network in selected areas of NTE Region has provided tools for WSD. This solution carries out real-time monitoring of the water network in a virtual environment and visualizes real-time operations.  The network´s hydraulic model was developed to simulate and carry out what-if scenario analysis in the pilot project. This aimed to measure the impact of operational changes such as water main isolation and change of supply zone.

Outcomes

Idrica brings its experience as a pioneer in digital transformation as well as its advanced knowledge in the development and implementation of digital twins to the entire process. Specifically, it has provided the WSD with a hydraulic model which was calibrated with the data received from the flow and pressure sensors installed in the existing freshwater network.
