The copper construction naturally resists fouling agents in the water and prevents organisms from attaching to the guard.
If you would like a guard without bio-fouling properties for calibration purposes, or you simply don't need anti-fouling, you may want to consider this EXO1 Probe Guard.
Note: It's an excellent idea to have two sensor guards available. One for use in the field, and one that is kept very clean in the lab for calibrations only. This helps to avoid interference from impurities during calibration.
