Flygt hydro turbines used for small-scale hydroelectric power in Kentucky
Appalachian Hydro Associates (AHA) in Ravenna, Kentucky, was seeking to develop a more cost-effective model for small hydro projects. AHA partnered with Berea College to offset the upfront investments, then began planning a small hydroelectric power plant at an abandoned lock chamber along the Kentucky River. With five Flygt hydro turbines from Xylem, the plant is now a source of revenue for the college, producing 500 kilowatts of energy per turbine.
